Government Is Launching Its Own Operating System Replacing Microsoft Windows

Indian govt to have its own operating system for official use. A highly improved and secured version of BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions) has been developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing). Indian government is all set to release BOSS this month.
The new OS is believed to have been launched to overcome the vulnerabilities that exist in government cyberspace resulting in a number of countless attacks by hackers.
BOSS, which is a linux distribution, is developed with the help of Gujarat Technical University, DRDO and some other private computer manufacturers.

Welcome to the ELK Stack: Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana

What is the ELK Stack?

The ELK stack consists of Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana.  Although they've all been built to work exceptionally well together, each one is a separate project that is driven by the open-source vendor Elastic—which itself began as an enterprise search platform vendor. It has now become a full-service analytics software company, mainly because of the success of the ELK stack. Wide adoption of Elasticsearch for analytics has been the main driver of its popularity.  
Data constantly flows into your systems, but it can quickly grow to be fat and stale. As your data set grows larger, your analytics will slow up, resulting in sluggish insights. And this is likely to be a serious business problem. So, the BIG question for your big data is: how can you maintain valuable business insights?
Not long ago, an epiphany ran through the industry: analytics is, in essence, a search problem that needs coupling with good visualizations. So, there was a marriage: Lucene with all its search goodness was brought together with the distributed-computing goodness that is Elasticsearch. Logstash came onto the scene to normalize all kinds of time-series data. Pop in Kibana's ultra-simple visualization tool, and you have a complete analytics tool that can rival very expensive and scalable solutions from Oracle, Palantir, Tableau, Splunk, Microsoft, and others. You, too, can play with the big boys for a lot less $$$.
Let's ask the question a bit differently. How can you maintain blazing-fast analytics as you data grows larger and larger? Answer: the ELK stack makes it way easier -- and way faster -- to search and analyze large data sets.
We should mention that ELK is quite versatile. Use the stack as a stand-alone application, or integrate with your existing applications to get the most current data. With Elasticsearch, you get all the features to make real-time decisions-all the time. You can use each of these tools separately, or with other products. For example, Kibana often goes together with Solr/Lucene. Although none of these is a project of the Apache Foundation, each part of the stack falls under the Apache 2 License. Elasticsearch owns both the intellectual property and the trademarks.

Elasticsearch is a juggernaut solution for your data extraction problems. A single developer can use it to find the high-value needles underneath all of your data haystacks, so you can put your team of data scientists to work on another project. Consider these benefits:
Real-time data and real-time analytics. The ELK stack gives you the power of real-time data insights, with the ability to perform super-fast data extractions from virtually all structured or unstructured data sources. Real-time extraction, and real-time analytics. Elasticsearch is the engine that gives you both the power and the speed.
Scalable, high-availability, multi-tenant. With Elasticsearch, you can start small and expand it along with your business growth-when you are ready. It is built to scale horizontally out of the box. As you need more capacity, simply add another node and let the cluster reorganize itself to accommodate and exploit the extra hardware. Elasticsearch clusters are resilient, since they automatically detect and remove node failures. You can set up multiple indices and query each of them independently or in combination. 

Full text search. Under the cover, Elasticsearch uses Lucene to provide the most powerful full-text search capabilities available in any open-source product. The search features come with multi-language support, an extensive query language, geolocation support, and context-sensitive suggestions, and autocompletion.

Document orientation. You can store complex, real-world entities in Elasticsearch as structured JSON documents. All fields have a default index, and you can use all the indices in a single query to get precise results in the blink of an eye.

Logstash — Routing Your Log Data

Logstash is a tool for log data intake, processing, and output. This includes virtually any type of log that you manage: system logs, webserver logs, error logs, and app logs. As administrators, we know how much time can be spent normalizing data from disparate data sources. We know, for example, how widely Apache logs differ from NGINX logs.
Rather than normalizing with time-sucking ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load), we recommend that you switch over to the fast track. Instead, you could spend much less time training Logstash to normalize the data, getting Elasticsearch to process the data, and then visualize it with Kibana. With Logstash, it's super easy to take all those logs and store them in a central location. The only prerequisite is a Java runtime, and it takes just two commands to get Logstash up and running. 
Using Elasticsearch as a backend datastore and Kibana as a frontend dashboard (see below), Logstash will serve as the workhorse for storage, querying and analysis of your logs. Since it has an arsenal of ready-made inputs, filters, codecs, and outputs, you can grab hold of a very powerful feature-set with a very little effort on your part.
Think of Logstash as a pipeline for event processing: it takes precious little time to choose the inputs, configure the filters, and extract the relevant, high-value data from your logs. Take a few more steps, make it available to Elasticsearch and—BAM!—you get super-fast queries against your mountains of data. 

Kibana — Visualizing Your Log Data  

Kibana is your log-data dashboard. Get a better grip on your large data stores with point-and-click pie charts, bar graphs, trendlines, maps and scatter plots. You can visualize trends and patterns for data that would otherwise be extremely tedious to read and interpret. Eventually, each business line can make practical use of your data collection as you help them customize their dashboards. Save it, share it, and link your data visualizations for quick and smart communication.
If you're using Qbox, then you can easily enable Kibana from your dashboard, which eliminates the need for extra infrastructure. It's too easy to setup, configure, and refine comparisons of your data queries across an adjustable time scale. How Can I Use the ELK Stack to Manage my Log Data?

Your critical business questions have answers in logs of your applications and systems, but most potential users of the data in those logs assume that the accessibility barrier is too high. But the answers are in there -- answers to questions such as:

  • What is the effectiveness of our ad campaign?
  • What is the best time to perform system maintenance?

How to Increase battery life of your laptop

Every laptop or Netbook user these days have the same headache of limited backup time of batteries. As far as your system is new , you will have a good backup time but when it becomes a few months old you will definitely face problem of limited battery life.

There is an inbuilt command in your computer for improving battery life as well as the performance of the system but not all users are aware of it. Some laptops directly provide an interface with option termed as “ POWER SAVING MODE ” but  if your laptop is old or don’t have this feature by default , you need not to worry because you can do the same task manually.
If you have a laptop with Windows 7 installed, you can use the ‘powercfg‘ command . It will display useful information about your laptop’s energy consumption and usage. If  you can understand and maintain  it correctly then you can extend your Battery life and performance by great amount.

Steps to execute this command :


Step 1: Click on the Start Menu and type “ CMD ” in the Start Search bar.

Step 2: The search will start and it will then display an icon of “ CMD ” . simply right click on it and select Run as administrator.

Step 3: It will open command line, now simply run the command “powercfg -energy” without quotes. (For windows 7 users.)
                                 -OR-
Simply run the command “powercfg /energy” without quotes. (For windows 8 users.)

Step 4: Now Press “Enter”.

Once you successfully execute this command , Windows  will run a complete scan of  your system and it will find some ways to improve performance and power efficiency.
The results of this process will be saved to an HTML file, which is commonly  present  in the “System32” folder of most of the systems.
To access this file, simply follow the path which will be displayed in command prompt window after completion of the command. Read This file to understand that what program in your system is consuming more power and degrading the performance.

A Thermoelectric generator powered by a tealight. It started as an experiment of how much power I could get from one candle. But I liked the idea and it worked really well so I built this electric-mechanical ornament. I did not use a high temperature TEG-module, but instead a cheap TEC-module. That can still handle 200 degrees Celsius which is good enough.

Concept:
It is also called a peltier element and when you use it as a generator it's called seebeck effect. You have one hot side and one cold. The module generates power to drive a motor and the motor fan/air flow will cool the upper heat sink. Higher temperature difference => increased output power  => increased motor RPM => increased air flow => increased temperature difference and so on. The airflow will spread the heat into your room, which is the purpose of this construction.

If you unmounts the basement you could also use it as a stove-fan or move air from other heat sources. The motor start to turn at about 15 degrees difference, which to my surprise worked when I just went outdoors with it and the upper heat sink got cooler than the basement. You can place it in hot water, on an ice cube, a pizza and it works just as fine.

Total cost was about 50€ (incl. shipping costs). I used some spare parts but I bought most of it.

Components used:
• CPU-cooler (cold side): Zalman CNPS5X (Base plate: 33x33mm)
• CPU-cooler (hot side): From an old PC (WxLxH=78x63x67mm)
• TEC-module: TEC1-07110T200 (30x30x3.3mm)
• DC Motor: 1,5-3V
• USB-fan (metal, only needed the fan)
• Thermal paste: Arctic MX-4
• A piece of wood
• Two pull springs
• Four M4 bolts and two M3 bolts
• Aluminum tubes (optional)

TEC specification (at ΔT=68C):
Vmax: 8.5
Imax: 10
Qmax: 52.7
Tmax: 200 degrees Celsius

Construction:
First of all, it does not need to be exactly those components. Other heat sinks, TEC/TEG, motor, fan, thermal paste, bolts and base plate can be used. Main concept rules are:
  • A TEC or TEG module (smaller dimension than upper heat sink base plate). Specifications are not that important but make sure it can handle high temperature. Many modules are only 100 degrees C and then you need to modify the construction as it gets warmer than that.
  • One hot side that is not hotter than TEC max-temp (My candle flame never touches the surface)
  • One cold side, an efficient heat sink (heat pipes) are a good choice
  • Good thermal paste to maximize temperature difference
  • Low voltage motor, around 1V. I prefer it to be quite (low dB)
  • Fan with high air flow at low RPM
  • Base plate that adds stability, holder for light, isolate heat
  •  
The lower heat sink (hot side) was cut and polished to get it nice looking. I kept 5mm of the fins to absorb the heat well when the light flame burns and increases distance to the surface. New dimensions are 78x63x15mm. 4 holes are drilled through the heat sink and threaded as M4. 4 bolts will hold the lower heat sink on top of a wooden platform. Bolts go through the platform from below, covered with aluminum pipes for a better looking design and are screwed into the heat sink. The distance between wood and heat sink is 35mm but I would make it 40-45mm as the flame almost touches the surface. You don´t want that because it creates black soot. The lower heat sink gets really warm but at the same time it works as a cooler to not get TOO warm, that would melt the TEG-module.

Two springs attached to M3 bolts fixate the upper heat sink on the lower, with TEC-module and thermal paste in between. Both surfaces of the TEC are covered with a thin smooth layer of thermal paste. The springs adds pressure as well as isolate the heat to travel to the cold side. The upper heat sink could also be screwed into the lower heat sink but then you need isolated screws.

The TEC is directly attached/soldered to the motor and the motor is attached to the upper heat sink by another small piece of metal and a cable tie. The fan is attached to the motor with a small belt wheel and glue.

Result:
I think the hot aluminum part get to about 100-150 Celsius, I measured the temp with a grill thermometer covered in thermal paste but can´t tell how accurate it was. I measured 0.4V and 0.25A with one candle and 0.67V and 0.54A with two. That results in 0.1W resp. 0.36W output power. The efficiency to produce electricity this way is not that impressive though. A candle produce about 25 Watts, that means 0.7% efficiency.. But who cares, everything this machine does will eventually end up in heat any way =) That is a bit interesting, you increase the room-heating speed (I think) but looses nothing..

It is a bit noisy to have running all the time. To find the optimal motor/fan => airflow/noise level will require some more experimenting.

Mod Proposals:
  • Skip the base platform and bolts and use it as a stove-fan.
  • Use two/four TECs side-by-side to multiply output power. Add a 5-10mm thick copper plate that covers all modules and then place the CPU-cooler on top of that.
  • Use a brushless DC motor and a suitable fan to make it noiseless.
  • Build in a slow motor beneath the platform to make the whole thing spin 360 degrees.
  • Put wheels on the platform.

Modern robots are driven by brushless AC servo motors


Almost all modern Robots are driven by brushless AC servo motors but many of the robots existing in industry use other drives.


Pneumatics 
Many of the simple pick and place arms are driven by pneumatics. This makes them cheap but has the disadvantage of being difficult to control. Pneumatics are still used with a number of modern robots to drive end effectors.
Hydraulics 
Hydraulic drives were used on a large number of the early robots as it was more rigid and controllable than pneumatics and it could provide more power than the electric drives then available. The problems with hydraulics are that it tends to be fairly slow in operation and that due to the high pressures involved leaks can be very messy.
Electric 
There are three major types of electric drive that have been used for robots. Stepper Motors These are used mainly for simple pick and place mechanisms where cheapness is more important than power or controllability.
  • DC Servos 
    For the early electric robots the DC servo drive was used extensively. It gave good power output with a high degree of control of both speed and position.
  • AC Servos 
    In recent years the AC servo has taken over from the DC servo as the standard drive. These modern motors give higher power output and are almost silent in operation. As they have no brushes they are very reliable and require almost no maintenance in operation.

HydroBOB Puts the Scooter Underwater !



For those with no diving experience, or who don’t know how to swim, Andrew Sneath has created an underwater vehicle just for you. Offering a controlled environment, and the ability to breathe regularly thanks to a bubble around the rider’s head, the HydroBOB underwater scooter is perhaps not the most graceful device to ever descend beneath the waves, but it does look like a somewhat safe method to experience the joys of being underwater.
The HydroBOB is consisted of three parts: the scooter, a viewing bubble that has a 180 degree view, and an oxygen tank. The rider sits on the seat and holds onto the handlebars, where triggers can be used to control the thrust. As we said above, the ride doesn’t seem to be all that smooth, but we imagine that it could probably be a lot worse. The ride is slow, but for those who can’t swim, that may be a good thing.

The underwater scooter is connected to a support structure above the surface of the water. Considering the large tether that connects the scooter and the support structure above, the HydroBOB probably can’t go very far. The BOB in HydroBOB stands for Breathing Observation Bubble. If you’re interested in taking a ride on the scooter, you’ll have to head to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where you can rent your very own for $25 per hour. Or you can rent one for a private event.
